NEW YORK (AP) – The MLS regular season will begin on the earliest date ever recorded, so that it can conclude before the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
There will be 18 teams that will start playing on February 26. The last day of the regular season, known as Decisive Day, is set for October 9.
The MLS final will be played on November 5, before the start of the World Cup, which opens on November 21.
The 2021 season ended on Saturday with the coronation of New York City FC, which defeated the Portland Timbers in the final. After a short hiatus, the NYCFC will open the following season on February 27 as a road against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The 2022 campaign will include the introduction of the FC Charlotte expansion team. Nashville will open a stadium and the NYCFC is scheduled to hold games at Red Bull Stadium and Citi Field, in addition to Yankee Stadium.
The MLS All-Star Game is scheduled for August 10 at Allianz Field, Minnesota.
