The United States Coast Guard on Tuesday began searching for some 39 people who were traveling on a boat that capsized about 70 kilometers off the east coast of Florida, apparently in a case of human trafficking.
According to a statement from the Coast Guard, a person rescued a man clinging to an overturned boat off the coast of Fort Pierce Inlet, in the Atlantic, about 240 kilometers north of Miami.
The survivor reportedly said that he left Bimini, in the Bahamas, on Saturday night with 39 other people and that a storm capsized his boat.
According to what he said, no one on board was wearing a life jacket.
The authorities suspect that it is a case of “human trafficking”.
“Coast Guard air and ground crews are actively searching for people in the water,” the statement said.
