The arrival of the first heat wave of 2024 puts the electrical system in suspense and massive power outages are expected. The Secretary of Energy, Eduardo Rodríguez Chirillo, warned that “the sector is on the verge of collapse” due to a tariff schedule that “does not reflect the economic cost of supply.”
As reported by the National Meteorological Service (SMN), in the City of Buenos Aires and the Province the days with extreme temperatures will be this Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2, with a maximum of 38 degrees, while the minimum will be 25 degrees on average.

Along these lines, the electricity distributor Cammesa declared a state of alert and anticipated that consumption would reach a new demand record that could reach 29,500 MW. On March 13, 2023, it reached 29,105 MW, when Argentina suffered one of the largest heat waves in its history.
To avoid massive power outages, the maximum capacity of the generating park will be required. In the midst of the hearings to raise the tariff table, Chirillo warned that the situation of the generation park is “very worrying” and they plan to import electricity from Chile, Bolivia and Brazil because the “risks of outages are very high.”
