In the midst of an inflation that does not let up and after the setback in Deputies for the Omnibus Law, President Javier Milei seeks to send a message to the middle class.
The presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni, said this Friday that one of the possibilities is to put a cap on the fees of private schools. But there is another possibility that the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello and Milei, have been discussing: increasing schooling allowances. Currently, this benefit charges $16,000 per month. The Executive is analyzing tripling or quadrupling that figure.

The figure is not yet defined, but it is one of the alternatives that the government is evaluating and the President and the minister spoke about it personally on more than one occasion. Obviously, at the beginning of classes, Milei seeks to send a signal to the middle class, because inflation is still very high.

On Wednesday the INDEC index will be known, which will be around 20% as confirmed by the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo. The accumulated of the last three months is close to 75%. If we add the increase in prepaid bills, which was 20% this month and had already been increasing in previous months, plus the increase in the value of school fees and the increase in food prices, the impact is very strong.

For this reason, the government warns that the middle class is suffering the impact of the adjustment and seeks to give it some sign of support. It could be with caps on school fees – which would be rare – or by subsidizing educational establishments, or by increasing school allocations.

The measure is not defined, but the government's objective is, which is to have a gesture with those who suffer the most from the current situation and who are also a large part of its electorate. Milei still maintains a positive image, but perceives that the recession may dent popular appreciation of her.
“Capital Humano is working on it, very cautiously. Everything that is done will reach those who need it,” Adorni confirmed this Friday at a press conference. And he stressed: “Any aid that you provide has to be within the budgetary framework and our zero deficit scheme, complying with the same logic as energy subsidies or transportation subsidies, that it reaches the person it should reach and that is not a general subsidy.”
Days ago, different chambers and entities that bring together privately managed educational institutions throughout the country estimated that, for the beginning of the 2024 school year, there will be increases of between 30 and 50 percent in fees, while emphasizing that each jurisdiction will suffer a different increase because it depends on the adjustment made to the salary at the provincial level.
