The Argentine Under 23 National Team qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Javier Mascherano fueled the hope that Lionel Messi would play. The national team beat Brazil 1-0 in the last match of the final phase, came second behind Paraguay and won one of the two tickets awarded by the Venezuelan Olympic Qualifiers.

The coach referred to the possibility of both Messi and Ángel Di María being in the next Olympic event: “One understands that the times of the Senior National Team, with the Copa América, are not easy. We have to be cautious.”
However, in dialogue with TyC Sports, Mascherano surprised with a phrase about his responsibility in this situation: “Everyone knows my relationship with Ángel and Leo, we are friends; As a coach I have the obligation to invite them, but I understand that they have other commitments and it will also depend on that. Its not that easy. There is time to talk about it.”

The technical director also spoke about his players: “We had the goal of qualifying and today was a great relief for everyone. First for them, because for me we were the best team in the tournament. For one reason or another, we missed some results that we achieved at some point in the game. I am happy, on a personal level, to be able to enjoy a process like this.”
Then he referred to the criticism he received throughout the tournament: “I accept it where it comes from, I don't have any problem. It is important to accept them to grow. To know where you are going wrong and where to go. I put a lot of dedication into what I do. Today the ball went in and we are happy.”
