The self-proclaimed Free Republic of Liberland, founded in 2015 in “a no-man's zone” under territorial dispute between Croatia and Serbia, wants to promote and develop relations “to their maximum potential” with the libertarian government of Javier Milei. To this end, it plans to soon send a business delegation to Argentina to explore potential business areas.
“Javier Milei has spoken highly of Liberland's voluntary tax system in the past. “He recognizes our plan to become a beacon of new ideas of freedom,” the founder and “president” of that paper micronation and libertarian ideology based in a territory of 7 square km of forests under de facto Croatian administration told TN. the Czech Vit Jedlicka.

The country, which in practice does not exist as such, has authorities, a flag, anthem and currency, although it is not recognized by any nation. However, it claims to have 897 citizens spread throughout the world, 6 of them Argentine, and 91 registered companies. It even has an “ambassador” in Argentina, the economist Nicolás Mateos, 30 years old.
Liberland wants to do business in Argentina
Jedlicka is a 40-year-old Czech activist and publicist. In his country of origin he is the president of the Free Citizens Party, with a libertarian ideology. In Liberland, the self-proclaimed Balkan republic, he is president. The official motto is known: “Live and let live.”
In an interview with TN, this European politician confirmed that Liberland signed an agreement of understanding with the Argentine Libertarian Party. “We hope to develop the relationship between Liberland and Argentina to its maximum potential. We are planning to take a business delegation to Argentina next month. “We are bringing business in the areas of banking, cryptocurrencies and immigration services,” he commented.

The trip does not have a defined date. In fact, Liberland's representative in the country is not organizing any official visit. But Jedlicka was enthusiastic about that possibility and left the door open for a future meeting with Milei.

“I think the right time will come for us to meet in the future,” he said.
Milei knows very well what Liberland is. In fact, in February 2019, when he was still an eccentric and media-savvy economist, he dressed as a superhero at an event for otakus and Japanese anime fans. He baptized his character “General Ancap”, for anarcho-capitalist. He helped him characterize the current deputy Lila Lemoine. “I am General Ancap. I come from Liberland, a land created by the principle of original appropriation of man. A land of 7 square kilometers between Croatia and Serbia, a country where taxes are not paid, a country where individual freedoms are defended, where the individual is believed and there is no place for collectivist sons of bitches who want to screw up our lives. My mission is to kick the ass of Keynesians and collectivist sons of bitches who want to ruin our lives,” she said. It was a declaration of principles that coincided with the ideology of Liberland.

What is Liberland and where is it located?
Liberland is one of the many “nations” not recognized internationally. In fact, it does not exercise effective sovereignty over any territory.
Its founder took advantage of a blind spot after the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia. Between disputes and war conflicts, a small area located on the banks of the Danube was not claimed by any of the new Balkan republics. Both Serbia and Croatia today dispute sovereignty over that enclave. But it is the Zagreb government that exercises administrative control in the area. Its authorities have detained Jedlicka in the past for attempting to enter the territory.

The goal is to create a libertarian republic there. “It is a sovereign country located in the middle of the untouched beauty of the Northern Balkans in a region called Gornja Siga. Inspired by Swiss democracy, Liberland fuses the best features of direct democracy with elements of corporate governance, striving to be a state fit for the 21st century. Our spirit revolves around classical liberalism with the goal of being the freest nation in the world. Our motto summarizes our vision: ´Live and let live´”, reads on its official site.
According to Jedlicka, the area has been occupied by “Liberlanders since August 6, 2023.”

“Since then, we have been developing a security and justice system. Croatia sometimes attempts to enforce Croatian laws outside its territory. We hope to soon find a solution to this problem so that the full potential of Liberland can be harnessed for the benefit of the entire region. If Serbia or Croatia claim this land they will lose the border dispute,” he stated.
At the international level, Liberland managed to sign an agreement for the teaching of English with the mayor of Manizales, in Colombia, revoked after a wave of criticism, and approached the Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, through a donation in cryptocurrencies for the Hospital Benjamin Bloom Children's National. In Argentina, Liberland signed a memorandum of understanding with the Libertarian Party, whose leader is Milei himself. A delegation even met last year with Diana Mondino before the current chancellor assumed her position, according to “ambassador” Mateos.
Who is the ambassador of Liberland in Argentina
Liberland has representatives in different countries around the world. In Argentina its “ambassador” is Nicolás Mateos, a 30-year-old economist and entrepreneur.
“I came to Liberland searching the internet for the same thing as Jedlicka. When I saw that the principles coincided with mine, I joined. At first I had doubts. Some think it may be a scam. But today I can say that it is the most challenging thing in my life,” he said in dialogue with TN.

Mateos said that he was in Liberland twice. At a meeting in Serbia he met his authorities face to face. “What impacted me most was seeing people from all over the world, from different socioeconomic statuses speaking different languages, but wanting the same thing: something better. We seek a freer and more prosperous world,” he stated.
Some families who managed to build some very precarious houses live in the enclave today. “There are between 15 to 30 people throughout the territory,” Mateos said.
Nine years after its creation and with 897 citizens, Liberland states that it has registered 729,232 citizenship applications worldwide. There are 8,111 Argentine users registered in the official database.

“To be a citizen you have to collect 5000 merits. Each merit costs two dollars. Or you can work for Liberland and thus receive merits until you can become a citizen. This is a passion. We try to generate a more prosperous and free world, where taxes are voluntary. There is a Constitution, a government, authorities and a direct democracy,” she indicated.
Regarding his ties with the Argentine authorities, Mateos said that he spoke with the current chancellor, Diana Mondino, in November of last year, before she took office in Milei's cabinet, within the framework of the Bitcoin Conference held in Buenos Aires. Among those attending was the “president” of Liberland.
“We have forged ties with the Libertarian Party. We signed a memorandum of understanding in a framework of friendship and cooperation to promote the ideas of freedom,” concluded Mateos.
